What are the restrictions for online marriage in Utah?
Online marriage in Utah is a modern and highly flexible way to legally marry, even if you live in different countries or can't travel to the United States in person. In many cases, this format allows for the entire process to be completed remotely, quickly, and significantly easier than a traditional marriage registration.
However, as with any official government procedure, there are certain restrictions and requirements that are important to be aware of in advance. Below, we'll discuss the most common situations and possible limitations.
1. You must be 18 years of age or older. A marriage cannot take place if one of the partners is a minor.
2. You cannot get married in Utah if you are already married in some way, in any country.
3. If you are recently divorced, you must wait 60 days from the date of your official divorce or provide a divorce document translated into English.
We regularly work with recently divorced couples, so we can help you navigate this process calmly and without unnecessary questions – we'll provide all the necessary instructions and be there every step of the way.
4. You must have documents transliterated into Latin characters, including your photo, first/last name, and date of birth. Typically, this document is a passport, international passport, or other official identification document, such as a driver's license, temporary residence permit (VNZ) or permanent residence permit (PMZ) card, etc.
But even if you don't have such a document, we can still complete the necessary steps using other methods. We also have extensive experience with verification procedures involving documents written in non-Latin scripts. This process may be a bit more complicated and time-consuming, but with us, it's entirely possible!
5. Your online wedding ceremony must include two adult witnesses. Couples typically ask their relatives, friends, and other loved ones to act as witnesses, but anyone can serve as witnesses, regardless of their relationship, location, or other characteristics. Incidentally, if you can't find suitable people within your social circle for this role, we are happy to provide two adult witnesses for your ceremony.
