In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic began, the United States (and the world) saw lockdowns and restrictions on in-person gatherings. Many government offices, including county clerk's offices, temporarily closed or restricted visitors. This created a problem: People couldn't legally marry, especially if they were in different countries or couldn't physically gather in the same place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Utah's response Utah County was one of the first in the country to solve this problem in an unconventional way: In 2020, Utah County authorities officially allowed not only the submission of documents, but also the ceremony itself to be held via video link. This solution was initially temporary, but it turned out to be so effective and in demand that it later became permanent. Utah became the first US state where marriage could be concluded on 100% online, without the need to be physically present in the country or in an office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
